Protect your Business from Fire at Christmas

Fire hazards are a lot more common at Christmas time, and it is essential that your business adheres to usual standards of fire safety that you do all year round. Here are a few tips to ensure your employees and your building are safe from fire accidents this Christmas.

1/ Cardboard boxes may be building up due to an unusual amount of packages arriving at the office. Ensure that these boxes are folded away and put in the recycling as soon as possible. Do not let them spread out as they are very flammable, or build up so that they block fire exits or fire safety equipment.

2/ Festive decorations should not be paper trimmings or cotton wool, as these are very flammable. Decorations should be spaced around the office, so that a fire could not easily spread. Obviously positioning of decorations should be considered, so that they are nowhere near ignition sources such as light bulbs, microwaves and ovens. Fire retardant foil decorations and fire resistant paper decorations are available from suppliers, and should always be used in public areas of licensed premises

3/ Christmas Trees should be regularly watered, as a dry Christmas tree is a lot more flammable. Avoid placing the tree in areas of movement, so that it is less likely to be knocked over. Lighted candles should NEVER be placed on your Christmas tree.

4/ Fire alarms, emergency lighting, and fire fighting equipment should be regularly and routinely inspected over the Christmas period, as many small fire accidents could easily be avoided with the equipment that your office should already provide. Ensure all members of staff understand how to use the equipment in the appropriate manner.
