You can’t have missed the fact that it’s been snowing. A lot. And that the whole of the UK seems to have ground to a halt, with the ‘Beast from the East’ wreaking havoc on the roads, the railways and the airport schedules. With all these issues, your security won’t be at the top of your mind, although in this weather it can be at risk of needing maintenance and repair.
Here are a couple of ways that Jack Frost might have damaged your security technologies and what to do:
1/ Cables
Harsh winds and bitter cold can really damage your camera cables, so make sure to check for damage regularly. Wind can blow water in, as well as causing ice and foreign objects to hit against the cables, so look out for cut, frayed or torn exposed wires. Ensure to replace or reterminate these cables as soon as possible. A good routine to get into is replacing any worn wires before any extreme weather is expected to hit.
2/ Connectors
Connectors can be knocked loose or damaged by cold, windy and wet conditions, so make sure they are all in good repair and securely attached. As above, it is better to replace worn connectors before the cold weather hits, than your security go offline at a critical period.
3/ Lenses
Obviously the ice, sleet and snow can diminish the visibility of your camera lenses, so clean your lenses regularly with compressed air (perfect for getting rid of dirt and debris) and a microfibre cloth. Obstructions exterior to the camera such as icicles and fallen branches can also limit the camera’s vision, so keep an eye out for any obstructions.
4/ Power Supply
Keep checking your power supplies. This is imperative, as losing power during a storm can minimise your security in multiple ways. Regularly ensure your cameras have power and use voltmeters to notify you if you have lost power.
5/ Extreme CCTV
If your premises often gets extreme weather conditions, there are CCTV cameras built to cope with the cold. Often CCTV cameras struggle to operate when temperatures fall, however investing in certain cameras that have integrated heaters and are made to endure freezing temperatures will ensure that no matter what the weather, your security is not affected.
With the necessary precautions you can keep your security systems working at maximum efficiency, but please get in touch with our expert team on 01753 754890 if you are having any issues with your security.
